Try placing a pad over the bunion to reduce friction. You do not want to add thickness though, as this would instead just add more pressure. So cut a hole in the middle of the pad where the bunion protrudes. The surrounding area is now built up a bit and hopefully some of the pressure will now be taken off the bunion. Bunions of the big toe pain can cause much discomfort and distress. However there is a great deal that can be done to prevent its occurrence. For more great resources, advice and free information on this and many other foot problems head over to When you have a bunion, the bump appears swollen, red and painful on the inside of the foot around and in the big toe joint. The bump which you see is essentially the bone protruding towards the inside of the foot. With a bunion, the base of the toe will eventually become bigger and will stick out even more and it might continue to drift toward the rest of the toes and in several cases, the big toe could essentially come to rest under or over the second toe. With no proper treatment, the second toe can put pressure on the third toe changing its proper alignment. Hallux Valgus is the result of overpronation over time. Pronation is when your foot unlocks or flattens as your heel hits the ground; it does this to absorb shock. When you arch fails to adequately support your bodyweight against gravity, you overpronate. This forces your big toe to deviate toward your baby toe; it’s a compensation to overpronation. For example, if you pick up something rather heavy with your right hand, your entire body will shift to the left to keep you from falling – this is a compensation. Your body has shifted left and that’s abnormal, but the cause is hanging from your right hand. As you can now see, " hallux valgus " refers to the outward turning of the bone of the joint of the great toe, or as we say, the big toe, in an abnormal manner. This is the hallux valgus deformity. This outward turning of the bone of the joint, also known as the first metatarsophalangeal joint, is usually combined with soft tissue enlargement under the skin that shows up as a bump on the outside of the foot. This bump is what we call a bunion. In the medical profession today, the term " hallux valgus " is used to denote the condition of having a bunion. Doctors who practices podiatry can do it himself or may be also a team member of a medical group. There are podiatrists who work together with a band of doctors in different related medical specialty. For example, they will work in together with a doctor specializing in orthopedics or among multi-specialty group in dealing with podiatry requirements for patients with polygenic disorder. A podiatric practitioner may also evaluate the injuries of the foot or ankle. Some diagnostic center can help in the diagnosing and extent of injury so that a treatment plan set up is put into place. Treatment might include casting or splinting depending on the case at hand. The general purpose of surgery is to restore the original alignment of your toe to relieve pressure off the joint and lessen discomfort of your foot pain. Surgery is often done under "Twilight Sleep" and can be completed within a matter of hours with a pretty quick recovery time with proper care and treatment. Podiatry is a branch of medication that specifically takes control in the diagnosis and management of foot and ankle conditions. This is the occupation taken by doctors of Podiatric medication, also referred as podiatrists. An active foot doctor manages various conditions starting from aches to fractures and different other foot and ankle conditions. I also was thinking I do like that I had this done in November. I think with the holidays it has really made the time go by quickly and I'm hoping winter seems shorter too. Figure I haven't left my house much in the last "almost 3 weeks", so I haven't felt much cold. I'm assuming (or hoping) come Jan. 1st I will be able to be back to more of my normal schedule and then I will also only have to deal with 2 1/2 months of WINTER! Don't get me wrong I like Winter. Thoughts on that one? Figure mid-January I'd be at 8 weeks. Some of the most common symptom for bunion is severe pain. The area becomes red and tender causing inflammation. There is also a burning sensation and sometimes numbness. You can develop other problems like in-growth of toe nail and well as sores between the toes. If these symptoms do not satisfy your doubts, you can check it with your local doctor by taking an x-ray. Bunion can be rectified only through surgery, but you can use some home remedies to prevent such problem and also get some relief. note that a technically correct surgical procedure may leave toe stiff once placed in corrected position (due to soft tissue contractures); A bunion is a painful swelling of the small fluid-filled sac at the base of the hallux valgus or big toe, leading to the enlargement and protrusion of the joint. Structural bunions occur when the metatarsophalangeal joint between the metatarsal bones of the foot and the proximal bones of the toes enlarges and thickens. Over time this imbalance in the joint can lead to arthritis. The surgical procedures for the repair of hallux valgus can include resecting the bunion, re-aligning the bones of the toe into their proper positions or improving the muscle balance between the intrinsic and extrinsic toe muscles, according to Georgetown University Hospital.
